its honestly fairly satisfying to read a work within a relatively small/tight knit literature, so you know all the references that are made
on the other hand it's stifling and boring to know that this is the best we've got
it's funny to describe it as "satisfying" when it's most directly experienced as "ugh, of course you'd cite him"
