From the start, whatever happiness is intermittently tolerated or granted by the existing entirety bears the marks of its own particularity. To this day, all happiness is a pledge of what has not yet been, and the belief in its imminence obstructs its becoming.
The only responsible option is to deny oneself the ideological misuse of one’s own existence, and as for the rest, to behave in private as modestly, inconspicuously and unpretentiously as required, not for reasons of good upbringing,

The goal of the well-integrated personality is objectionable because it expects the individual to establish an equilibrium between conflicting forces, which does not obtain in existing society. Nor should it, because these forces are not of equal moral merit.
People are taught to forget the objective conflicts which necessarily repeat themselves in every individual instead of helped to grapple with them.
