The interruption of a previously successful schizoid compromise (successful meaning stable and predictable) creates tremendous intrapsychic motivation for change in order to effect a new, stable, better compromise.
my only criticism is that ralph klein is overly optimistic here. there is no pressure for a 'better' compromise (or anything meaningfully 'new', for that matter), rather any compromise at all. however, the delusional optimism is likely therapeutically useful, so i'll let it slide a bit
