She used to talk about my father as though he were dirty scum. I tried not to do that, but I went right ahead and did it. I always found something. I could never engage in real intimacy, sexual or any other way. I was always afraid because if I did get involved, I wouldn't be able to fulfill my commitment because I'd get too frightened. Like the last time I thought I had a relationship. I had turned off to him, but I didn't want him to leave me completely. Sometimes, when he'd come over, I couldn't wait for him to leave. He wanted to leave his pillow here. I wouldn't let him. To me it represented something-! don't know-like it was an invasion of my space, of me. In a way, anybody was better than nobody, yet when he was here, I wanted him to go.

Agents may or may not have an 'interest' in the satisfaction of their wishes and desires. Partially reformed alcoholics may still have a strong desire for drink, but they also have an interest in the non-satisfaction of that desire. I may have an interest in having some of my desires satisfied, but I may also have an interest in not having them satisfied at the moment (or at all), in acquiring new desires which I do not now have, or in losing desires of which I disapprove. One might try to construe all these cases as ones in which I experience a conflict between two desires - perhaps a 'first-order desire' and a 'second-order desire' - rather than as a conflict between wish/desire on the one hand, and something else ('interest') on the other. I would prefer not to adopt this strategy for the following reason: I may have a desire with which I wholly identify myself, and may have an interest in not gratifying that desire, although I have no second-order desire not to gratify it. Partially reformed alcoholics have a strong first-order desire for drink, and a strong second-order desire that that first-order desire not be satisfied; these desires conflict. Ambivalence The experience of anorexia nervosa is fraught with ambivalence (Williams & Reid, 2010). Ambivalence is defined as having both positive and negative feelings, or conflicting motivations, about something. In contrast to most mental health problems, anorexia is seen as positive, at least in part, by patients (Garner & Bemis, 1982). Several studies have documented the ambivalence experienced by individuals with anorexia nervosa (Colton & Pistrang, 2004; Reid, Burr, Williams, & Hammersley, 2008). In many cases, patients report feeling uncertain about whether anorexia is a “friend” or an “enemy” and whether it is a problem that needs treatment (Colton & Pistrang, 2004), often spending a great deal of time weighing its advantages and disadvantages (Cockell, Geller, & Linden, 2003). At times, patients may experience the disorder as an empowering mark of distinction that is to be further cultivated (Warin, 2004). In spite of the clear importance of the therapeutic relationship, many therapists hold negative attitudes toward clients with eating disorders, often viewing them as difficult and defiant, frustrating, and reluctant to engage in treatment (Fairburn & Harrison, 2003). After all, anorexia nervosa is ego-syntonic in nature, in contrast to most psychiatric disorders, which are experienced as intrusive and undesirable by the patient. As a result, an entrenched and polarized battle often develops between patients and health care providers (Tierney, 2008). Janosch Prinz, Radicalizing Realism in Political Theory, pg 139 (OP post quote is on pg 110) The questioning and interrogating critique in question here oscillates between immanent and negativistic forms of critique on the one hand and dissociating forms of critique on the other.19 Immanent and negativistic forms of critique are important as questioning and interrogating critique starts from within an already ongoing process specific to a historical political context. It intervenes into this process through the diagnosis of problems and their further problematization and then tries to build conceptual resources for evaluating and overcoming these problems. Dissociating forms of critique proceed from a similar starting position and share a negativistic perspective. However, here the diagnosis is used to contribute to the goal of dissociating oneself as much as possible from one’s context without abstracting from the contingencies that characterize this context. Importantly, the latter understanding of critique also does not draw on some kind of developmental model – of rationality or of problem-solving capacities – which is common to forms of immanent critique. For this form of critique the suspension of judgment is already an achievement, the further consequences of which cannot be determined by the critique itself (see also Foucault 1984: 68).
