oh nice i experience the same thing every time i read dewey

ngl i know very little about meditation and that was my way of baiting you into telling me more

you meditate _about_ things? yikes, guess we found our topic

oh yea for sure - that analysis and critique is essential for understanding the ways in which the medium of expression molds consciousness it’s so neat when we’re the same person diza :)

holy shit yes pls if you have any ideas lmk

yea agree (see other thread), i’m not saying i have much of an expectation of anything different for now, but i am saying i am annoyed by it meow

tho i’ll say that these aren’t absolute institutions, and the ideas in folks have impose their own limits on what institutions are possible. there is wiggle room there and i don’t think it’s unreasonable to attempt to cultivate that

defi a lot of contributing factors (incl. what you’ve mentioned) but at the end of the day i think it comes down to ye olde boogeyman, liberalism. there is a core notion of consensus as both a regulative ideal and something that actually exists. combined with a public/private divide,

where conflict can be relegated to separate sphere, disruption of the latter is frowned upon. just seems like a boring outgrowth of the lack of recognition of the conflict-ridden and political nature of the everyday

thank you for keeping the peace 🙏🙏🙏

haha this is defi true but idk at what point i get to throw up my hands and say I HATE YOU ALL, STOP BEING CRINGE. like at that point it’s a much broader issue than platform design i think

hmm i definitely agree that system design has a major influence on the behavioral patterns of users, but i don’t know if i’m convinced it’s deterministic. cultural mores are just as much ‘material’ (to use the obvious metaphor)

the schismogenisis bit isn’t rly the important part in this case, it’s more the observation that a range of superstructure is possible despite the similar base

oh yeah shit i’m like so behind on my social dailies srry bestie

oh yea the hostility makes sense for sure, and i’m certainly not of the position that everyone has to defend every proposition at every point. it’s sometimes perfectly appropriate to say “yknow i’ve kinda made up my mind on the whole trans thing” and unplug

the phenomenon i’m mainly targeting here is people saying “i have a take but i don’t want to discourse” where they clearly do have interest and want to engage, but are holding back

well that’s the interesting part right? frequently it generates consensus through creating sub-communities of unquestionable lock-step morals. the aversion to discourse is cyclical here, because the norm is that disagreement is discouraged so users causing conflict get weeded out

alright great i’m glad we have reached consensus in my anti-consensus thread, now that the meta-discourse has been resolved you can resume your regularly scheduled discourse

in a sense this is true, but i also think people need to be comfortable challenging even there most deeply held convictions, in a disagreement that might actually threaten something important to them

(not that conflict is good in all cases ofc, the decision to opt-out is contextual, not categorical one way or the other)

very very good but if exposed to open air it will dissolve

as my bio implies, my feeds are only lists rn, you’d think i’d be more immune to brainrot!

idk why everyone’s so afraid of discourse

it’s fine to disagree and even argue with your friends, and yes publicly! it’s lubricant for thought and good for the soul

the desire (and expectation!) of consensus needs to be inoculated against

sorry slug i like this option better

@kasey.cafe i can’t imagine we’d have time off work anytime soon but…

this is so comf i wish i was closer to y’all

oh it’s just like boomer humor “my dad works at microsoft” is like “i know cool inside secrets because i know a guy” and “my girlfriend goes to another school” is similarly like “oh i’ve totally got a gf and im cool you just don’t know her”, with the implication that both are lies

his uncle works at discord oh and um his girlfriend goes to another school

at least it makes for a snappy acronym: SOTTATLLMAOCDCIAATYSCAAOOTLMWOTOJBWISTTAHYTANPANA

hey has anyone noticed this mark guy shares good music

the pattern matching in question
def is_girl(display_name):
    return display_name.endswith("a")

ur on ur own, get her ass john

@kasey.cafe can u believ dis (pls i need one person to share my pain)

i lied i’m just a really good ally

well i was asking for a friend accly, im very committed to my lack of commitment
