tho i’ll say that these aren’t absolute institutions, and the ideas in folks have impose their own limits on what institutions are possible. there is wiggle room there and i don’t think it’s unreasonable to attempt to cultivate that

defi a lot of contributing factors (incl. what you’ve mentioned) but at the end of the day i think it comes down to ye olde boogeyman, liberalism. there is a core notion of consensus as both a regulative ideal and something that actually exists. combined with a public/private divide,

where conflict can be relegated to separate sphere, disruption of the latter is frowned upon. just seems like a boring outgrowth of the lack of recognition of the conflict-ridden and political nature of the everyday

well that’s the interesting part right? frequently it generates consensus through creating sub-communities of unquestionable lock-step morals. the aversion to discourse is cyclical here, because the norm is that disagreement is discouraged so users causing conflict get weeded out

yea for sure, opt-out makes a ton of sense in many situations. but avoiding it tout court is a mistake i think

in a sense this is true, but i also think people need to be comfortable challenging even there most deeply held convictions, in a disagreement that might actually threaten something important to them

(not that conflict is good in all cases ofc, the decision to opt-out is contextual, not categorical one way or the other)
