william james, the meaning of truth, the will to believe, is life worth living Consider a poor dog whom they are vivisecting in a laboratory. He lies strapped on a board and shrieking at his executioners, and to his own dark consciousness is literally in a sort of hell. He cannot see a single redeeming ray in the whole business; and yet all these diabolical-seeming events are often controlled by human intentions with which, if his poor benighted mind could only be made to catch a glimpse of them, all that is heroic in him would religiously acquiesce. Healing truth, relief to future sufferings of beast and man, are to be bought by them. It may be genuinely a process of redemption. Lying on his back on the board there he may be performing a function incalculably higher than any that prosperous canine life admits of; and yet, of the whole performance, this function is the one portion that must remain absolutely beyond his ken. come to what is the soul of my discourse. Religion has meant many things in human history, but when from now onward I use the word I mean to use it in the supernaturalist sense, as declaring that the so-called order of nature that constitutes this world's experience is only one portion of the total Universe, and that there stretches beyond this visible world an unseen world of which we now know nothing positive, but in its relation to which the true significance of our present mundane life consists. A man's religious faith
broad. What then do we now mean by the religious hypothesis? Science says things are; morality says some things are better than other things; and religion says essentially two things. First, she says that the best things are the more eternal things, the overlapping things, the things in the universe that throw the last stone, so to speak, and say the final word. "Perfection is eternal,"-this phrase of Charles Secrétan seems a good way of putting this first affirmation of religion, an affirmation which obviously cannot yet be verified scientifically at all. The second affirmation of religion is that we are better off even now if we believe her first affirmation to be true. 'THE TRUE, to put it very briefly, IS ONLY THE EXPEDIENT IN THE WAY OF OUR THINKING, JUST AS THE RIGHT IS ONLY THE EXPEDIENT IN THE WAY OF OUR BEHAVING. Expedient in almost any fashion, and expedient in the long run and on the whole, of course; for William James January 11, 1842 - August 26, 1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist, and the first educator to offer a psychology course in the United States. James is considered to be a leading thinker of the late 19th century, one of the most influential philosophers of the United States, and the "Father of American psychology."

Raymond Geuss, "Did Williams Do Ethics?", A World Without Why, pg 181 Williams used to say that the United States was the most eighteenthcentury country in the world; it was, he thought, politically, socially, and culturally caught in a kind of time-warp, an apparently eternal present that was actually represented by some point in time in the 1790s. Williams never expatiated on what exactly he meant by this statement—I assume that the reason for this was he thought that this was a particular kind of interpretative statement: if you did see the point of it, you required no further elaboration because it would immediately ring true to certain experiences you had had, putting them in a certain intelligible order; and if you didn’t see the point of it immediately, then no amount of further elaboration on his part would convince you. And then the statement might actually have a more potential long-term effect, if it was simply dropped so as to shatter on the floor like a huge bit of unwanted crockery and the noise was allowed to reverberate through the room sans commentaire. Presumably part of what he meant, though, was that the country had never been able to move beyond a particularly archaic form of the struggle of the Enlightenment with its enemies. Nothing after Adam Smith and Kant really survived the Middle Passage to take root on the western side of the Atlantic, so the culture was stuck in a state of trench warfare between a party that identified itself (in some way or another) with Enlightenment Reason (either through commitment to the ideal rationality of “free markets,” to technologically rational solutions to all problems, or to vapid Kantian “norms”) and an obscurantist religious fundamentalism that was all the more dark for defining itself in contrast to reason. Raymond Geuss, "Did Williams Do Ethics?", A World Without Why, pg 181 To say that the United States is an eighteenth-century country is to give a historical interpretation and perhaps also express an attitude, but it is not, of course, to make a moral judgement in the technical sense in which some have wanted to construe the term “moral judgement.” It is not to say that the population is vicious or the institutions corrupt. It is not the kind of statement one is liable to encounter in a book on “ethics” but rather the sort of thing someone like Herodotus would have said (if he had had a suitable concept of history and historical framework at his disposal). In his last book, Truth and Truthfulness, Williams tries to develop a theory about the relation between factual data and interpretation, which has always struck me as very close to the theory of the “constellation” one finds in Benjamin and Adorno. The stars that compose a constellation are physical objects of a certain kind and each has a set of empirically specifiable properties, a location in the sky, a certain relative magnitude, perhaps a colour. A constellation is not a mere collection but an organization of a set of stars into a recognizable and perhaps significant pattern: a bear, a hunter, a wagon, a set of twins. One cannot, of course, create constellations ad libitum, using stars that are not already there, putting together stars that are too far apart from the human eye to see synoptically, or creating patterns that make no sense to us. So we—and what we are, as the historically located creatures we happen to be—partly determine what constellations there can be (for us) by virtue of setting out the limits of what can make sense to us.
Raymond Geuss, "Did Williams Do Ethics?", A World Without Why, pg 182 “What can make sense to us” is neither completely pre-given nor fully indeterminate, and to the extent to which we can change it, this can be done only over time, and probably only collectively. The sheerly physical data about the distribution of stars does not require us to group them into this set of constellations rather than some other, and in fact does not require us to group them into any constellations whatever. We don’t invent or create stars by organizing them into constellations. Still—and this is the claim Adorno and Benjamin make—at any rate, in the realm of collective human action, culture, and politics, we are guided by constellations, not by the analogues of raw or theoretically manipulated astrophysical data, and there is no real alternative to that. It just is not possible to do without something like constellations. Similarly, Williams thought that there were facts that had the hard, unmalleable character we usually attribute to them and that could be discovered by “empirical” means (whatever they turn out to be). The U.S. Constitution had x-number of articles and article z was passed on such-and-such a day. On the other hand, the “positivist” dream that one could dispense with any interpretation and simply let the facts speak for themselves was just that—a dream. Similarly, no set of “facts” requires one to adopt a particular interpretation, but no interpretation that anyone would take seriously simply floats unconnectedly above the data or connects them in merely arbitrary ways.

tristam hunt, introduction to engels’ the origin of the family communist society did not include homosexuality. 4 In fact, the private Engels was something of a homophobe. In 1869, Karl Marx had sent him a copy of the German lawyer Karl Ulrich's book Argonauticus, which argued that same-sex desire was inborn, that masculinity and femininity should be regarded as a continuum, and coined the term 'Urning' to describe homosexual and lesbian attraction. Engels, revealing all of his Prussian Calvinist upbringing, was appalled by such 'unnatural revelations'. 'The paederasts are beginning to count themselves, and discover that they are a power in the state,' he wrote back to Marx in a hyperbolic, homophobic rant. Guerre aux cons, paix aus trous-de-cul [War on the cunts, peace to the arse-holes] will now be the slogan. It is a bit of luck that we, personally, are too old to have to fear that, when this party wins, we shall have to pay physical tribute to the victors ... just wait until the new North German Penal Code recognizes the droits du cul [rights of the arse-hole]; then he will operate quite differently. Then things will go badly enough for poor frontside people like us, with our childish penchant for females. 50

"The Moon" - The Microphones I drove up to the city at night And found the place where you grew up And then where you stayed And then we walked around and stayed up late Under city lights; and I spent the night Next to you in the house where you grew up Next to you, I miraculously woke up In your parents' house I lied in bed with you I went back to feel alone there I went back to wipe it clean I took the lights and radio towers out of my dreams And we went all the way up to the small town where I'm from With foggy air and the wind and the mountain tops And we clung to rocks and we looked off You held my hand, you almost got to start feeling me I finally felt like I was breathing free And under swaying trees, we fell asleep and had the same dream The stars were bright, we dream the same every night On my island home I spent some time with you I went back to feel alone there I went back there by myself And gave up on everything that we'd felt We found a precious place in the sand Right out in the wind, and we lied under a blanket And heard the furious sound The roar of waves, the pounding surf Two bodies on the earth It was intense just getting to be there next to you And you were trying to get me then And I was happy to let you in I went back and wished I hadn't I went back and felt regret I went to the beach and I stared west Every night when the sun went down In the town where we live, the empty streets were lit up By reflective light from a distant sun Bouncing off a glowing ball of rock We just lied on the roof and watched The moon, the moon, the blue light of the moon We didn't talk and silently we both felt powerful Like the moon, my chest was full Because we both knew we're just floating in space Over molten rock, and we felt safe and discovered that our skin is soft There's nothing left except certain death And that was comforting at night out under the moon https://youtube.com/watch?v=XBb54-AbctY

What seems to me – if you will allow me to put it this way – what appears to me to be the danger in your position, in which, God knows, I cannot ignore the undercurrent of a deep despair, is this: I fear that you sometimes surrender yourself to this identification with the aggressor out of a kind of – yes, forgive me – metaphysical despair. That is to say, you theoretically identify yourself with the very power that you yourself, like all of us, fear; but in doing so you also side with a whole series of things, which I think – and which you would probably also think – are nevertheless tied to the disaster in a profound way. nietzsche, genealogy of morals All respect them for the good spirits that may rule in these historians of morality! But it is, unhappily, certain that the historical spirit itself is lacking in them, that precisely all the good spirits of history itself have left them in the lurch! As is the hallowed custom with philosophers, the thinking of all of them is by nature unhistorical; there is no doubt about that. The way they have bungled their moral genealogy comes to light at the very beginning, where the task is to investigate the origin of the concept and judgment "good." "Originally"- so they decree"one approved unegoistic actions and called them good from the point of view of those to whom they were done, that is to say, those to whom they were useful; later one forgot how this approval originated and, simply because unegoistic actions were always habitually praised as good, one also felt them to be good as if they were something good in themselves." One sees straightaway that this primary derivation already contains all the typical traits of the idiosyncrasy of the English psychologists we have "utility," "forgetting," "habit," and finally "error," all as the basis of an evaluation of which the higher man has hitherto been proud as though it were a kind of prerogative of man as such. This pride has to be humbled, this evaluation disvalued: has that end been achieved? Now it is plain to me, first of all, that in this theory the source of the concept "good" has been sought and established in the wrong place: the judgment "good" did not originate with those to whom "goodness" was shown! Rather it was "the good" themselves, that is to say, the noble, powerful, high-stationed and high-minded, who felt and established themselves and their actions as good, that is, of the first rank, in contradistinction to all the low, low-minded, common and plebeian.
It was out of this pathos of distance that they first seized the right to create values and to coin names for these values: what had they to do with utility! The viewpoint of utility is as remote and inappropriate as it possibly could be in face of such a burning eruption of the highest rank-ordering, rank-defining value judgments: for here feeling has attained the antithesis of that low degree of warmth which any calculating prudence, any calculus of utility, presupposes— and not for once only, not for an exceptional hour, but for good. The pathos of nobility and distance, as aforesaid, the protracted and domineering fundamental total feeling on the part of a higher ruling order in relation to a lower order, to a "below" — that is the origin of the antithesis "good" and "bad." (The lordly right of giving names extends so far that one should allow oneself to conceive the origin of language itself as an expression of power on the part of the rulers: they say "this is this and this," they seal every thing and event with a sound and, as it were, take possession of it.) It follows from this origin that the word "good" was definitely not linked from the first and by necessity to "unegoistic" actions, as the superstition of these genealogists of morality would have it. Rather it was only when aristocratic value judgments declined that the whole antithesis "egoistic" “unegoistic" obtruded itself more and more on the human conscience it is, to speak in my own language, the herd instinct that through this antithesis at last gets its word (and its words) in. And even then it was a long time before that instinct attained such dominion that moral evaluation was actually stuck and halted at this antithesis (as, for example, is the case in contemporary Europe: the prejudice that takes "moral," "unegoistic," "désintéressé" as concepts of equivalent value already rules today with the force of a "fixed idea" and brain-sickness).
But there could be no greater and more fateful misunderstanding than if, through this process, the fortunate, the successful, the powerful in body and spirit should start to doubt their right to happiness. Away with this "twisted world"! Away with this disgraceful softening of feelings! That the invalids do not make the healthy sick-and that would be such a softening that should surely be ruling point of view on earth. But that would require above everything that the healthy remain separated from the sick, protected even from the gaze of sick people, so that they don't confuse themselves with the ill. Or would it perhaps be their assignment to attend on the sick or be their doctors? But they could not misjudge or negate their work more seriously something higher should never demean itself by becoming the tool of something lower. The pathos of distance should keep the work of the two groups forever separate! Their right to exist, the privilege of a bell with a perfect ring in comparison to one that is cracked and oft key, is a thousand times greater. They alone are guarantors of the future; they alone stand as pledge for humanity's future. Whatever they can do, whatever they should do the sick can never be able to do and should not do. But if they are to be able to do what they should do, how can they have the freedom to make themselves the doctor, the consoler, the "person who cures" the invalids? And therefore let's have fresh air! fresh air! In any case, let's keep away from the neighborhood of all cultural insane asylums and hospitals! And for that let's have good companionship, our companionship! Or loneliness, if that's necessary! But by all means let's stay away from the foul stink of inner rotting and of muck from sick worms! ... In that way, my friends, we can defend ourselves, at least for a little while, against the two nastiest scourges which may be lying in wait precisely for us against a great disgust with humanity! against a great pity for humanity!
willow
and inasmuch as i remain in your vicinity, i am similarly blameworthy.
diary › willow 11:12 it's not even that you're wrong like it's a perfectly fine point to make within the conversation you're having but the fact that you're engaging in the conversation at all is the deficiency. and it's not that given your position, it's unreasonable to do so, but that's just a further indictment of the position you've ended up in. sometimes there's a voluntative aspect to that position, and inasmuch as that is the case, you can be said to be culpable, in a sense. i don't care about the morality, i care about the aesthetics. the lack of beauty in the cultivation of your character, the circumstances you find tolerable to exist in.

11 – Data Structures Tables in Lua are not a data structure; they are the data structure. All structures that other languages offer---arrays, records, lists, queues, sets---are represented with tables in Lua. More to the point, tables implement all these structures efficiently. In traditional languages, such as C and Pascal, we implement most data structures with arrays and lists (where lists = records + pointers). Although we can implement arrays and lists using Lua tables (and sometimes we do that), tables are more powerful than arrays and lists; many algorithms are simplified to the point of triviality with the use of tables. For instance, you seldom write a search in Lua, because tables offer direct access to any type. It takes a while to learn how to use tables efficiently. Here, we will show how you can implement typical data structures with tables and will provide some examples of their use. We will start with arrays and lists, not because we need them for the other structures, but because most programmers are already familiar with them. We have already seen the basics of this material in our chapters about the language, but I will repeat it here for completeness. Programming in Lua (first edition) Part II. nietzsche, the gay science, 329
Leisure and idleness. - There is something of the American Indian, something of the savagery peculiar to the Indian blood, in the way the Americans strive for gold; and their breathless haste in working - the true vice of the new world - is already starting to spread to old Europe, making it savage and covering it with a most odd mindlessness. Already one is ashamed of keeping still; long reflection almost gives people a bad conscience. One thinks with a watch in hand, as one eats lunch with an eye on the financial pages - one lives like someone who might always 'miss out on something'. 'Rather do anything than nothing' - even this principle is a cord to strangle all culture and all higher taste.
