well to be transparent the sense of continuity i have in mind is a lot more abstract, something akin to “the mood this person captured in this time period of their life”, to use a creator-centric example

often, the artist completes a chaptered novel and then tells the audience to start at chapter 4. even if a collection is not chaptered in the traditional sense, the pieces hang together; the common thread is disrupted. track ordering is a significant artistic choice and is undermined.

i’m not bringing arbitrary criteria to bear on the art itself, expounding a regimented theory of what makes ‘good’ art. i’m saying the only criteria art in the true sense can have is criteria that creates itself.

sometimes however, the person that is a vector for the creation of the piece prevents it from doing so, in accordance with their own short term interests. that is disappointing to me, particularly because the sediment that is created today is the foundation for future art.

my message is not a categorical imperative, it is a reminder to be wary of the cultural conditions you find yourself in, and not to be led astray in the service of a goal that causes your art to suffer.

speaking more specifically about the original context

people have this interesting reaction to any normative imposition in certain domains, and it's particularly evident in aesthetics. it's interpreted as limitation, to which the obvious recourse is to reject the artificial closure of potential, and maintain the autonomy of art.

and the rejoinder is, of course, that it is precisely the autonomy of art that is threatened by the present state of things. credulously bowing down at the throne of instrumental reason is not the realm of freedom you think it is.
